If You’re Not Sure It’s Okay (1)

One of my organizational clients recently asked me to review a draft of their new and expanded harassment policy. In the part that discussed how each employee can contribute to the creation of a harassment-free workplace, one of the items that caught my eye read as follows:

“If you’re about to make a comment and you’re not sure whether it is unwelcome, ask if it’s okay.”

I invite you to ponder this clause for a moment: How do you feel about it? Does it fit with your own view on this matter? Would you recommend including such a clause in your own organization’s policy? If so, why? If not, why?

Stay tuned. In my next blog entry I’ll share my own thoughts on this clause!
